Stroke Rehabilitation Improved By Robotic Technology

Research scientists using a novel, hand-operated robotic device and functional MRI (fMRI) have found that chronic stroke patients can be rehabilitated, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). This is the first study using fMRI to map the brain in order to track stroke rehabilitation. "We have shown that the brain has the ability to regain function through rehabilitative exercises following a stroke," said A.

Multi-Translated HeartScore Revises Its Approach To Risk Assessment In Young Patients

A new release of HeartScoreĀ® the interactive tool designed to predict and help manage the risk of heart attack and stroke in Europe created by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) was launched on Tuesday 18 November 2008 at http://www.HeartScore.org. This revised version includes relative risk for younger patients, in addition to patient data history and progress monitoring.

New Class Of Lipids Suggests New Treatment Approach For Heart Attacks

Researchers have discovered one potential mechanism by which briefly cutting off, then restoring, blood flow to arteries prior to a heart attack lessens the damage caused, according to a study published in the journal Cardiovascular Research. The new mechanism points to how future drugs could provide protection ahead of heart attacks and strokes for those at highest risk. In the nearer term, the work may help to prevent damage caused as U.S.

Researchers Reveal What Makes The Heart 'Tick-Tock'

Researchers have new evidence to show that the heart beats to its own drummer, according to a report in the December issue of the journal Cell Metabolism, a Cell Press publication. They've uncovered some of the molecular circuitry within the cardiovascular system itself that controls the daily rise and fall of blood pressure and heart rate. The findings might also explain why commonly used diabetes drugs come with cardiovascular benefits, according to the researchers.

Long-Term Consequences Of Deep Venous Thrombosis Aren't Cured By Blood Thinners, Say McGill Scientists

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT), the formation of blood clots in the lower limbs, is the third-most common vascular disease in North America after heart attack and stroke, and is a frequent complication in hospitalized patients. DVT is a potentially serious condition that can lead to rapid death from pulmonary embolism if untreated, and has become such a serious health concern that the U.S.

Portable CT Increases Chance Of Stroke Survival And Recovery

New research has found that the availability of a portable eight-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner in an emergency room can significantly increase the number of stroke victims who receive a potentially life-saving treatment. Results of the study, conducted at North Shore Medical Center (NSMC)-Salem Hospital in Salem, Mass., will be presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Drinking Patterns More Important Than Total Imbibed In Cardivascular Disease Risk

A group of researchers has identified the precise mechanisms by which binge drinking contributes to clogs in arteries that lead to heart attack and stroke, according to a study published today in the journal Atherosclerosis. The works adds to a growing body of evidence that drinking patterns matter as much, if not more, to risk for cardiovascular disease than the total amount consumed.

Bevacizumab Associated With Increased Venous Thromboembolism

Bevacizumab, a cancer drug, may be associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, according to an analysis of several randomized controlled trials released on November 19, 2008 in JAMA. When a cancer forms, it necessarily undergoes the process of angiogenesis, whereby new blood vessels proliferate into the tumor.

When Stroke Is Maximal After A TIA And When To Treat With CAS Or Carotid Endartecectomy

Talks on when stroke is maximal after a TIA and when a patient should be treated with CAS or carotid endarterectomy (CAE) were discussed in depth at this year's VEITHsymposium in New York. Frank J. Veith, MD said, "Vascular disease management is in the midst of the endo-revolution, and there are many and powerful motivations for both patients and health professionals to jump on the endovascular stent bandwagon.

Do You Know You're Having A Stroke?

Timing And Patterns Of Stroke Following Carotid Artery Stenting Shown Similar To Those Seen After Carotid Endarterectomy

Ronald M. Fairman, M.D., Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and Chief, Division of Vascular Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, reported on the timing, location, severity and type of strokes occurring with CAS in the CAPTURE study. The Carotid ACCULINK/ACCUNET Post-Approval Trial to Uncover Unanticipated or Rare Events (CAPTURE) is a prospective, multi-center registry conducted to assess oueTD( in )-6.

Ultrasound Waves Aid In Rapid Treatment Of DVT

The use of ultrasound waves for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) may help dissolve blood clots in less time than using clot-busting drugs alone, according to researchers at Emory University. The study was presented Nov. 23, 2008 at the annual VEITHsymposium in New York City.

A Review Of Clinical Trial Data Details Factors Predictive Of Stroke And Paraplegia After Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR)

Ronald Fairman, M.D., Professor of Surgery and Chief, Division of Vascular Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, described University of Pennsylvania data regarding development of a stroke or paraplegia following TEVAR. Both complications are devastating and the identification of risk factors would be helpful. In the series at the University of Pennsylvania, the incidence of stroke was 5.

Cardiac Endarterectomy Confers Maximum Benefit In The First Two Weeks After Onset Of A Transient Ischemic Attack

Dr. Naylor from Leicester (UK) Royal Infirmary addressed an important question concerning timing of treatment of carotid disease after a patient has had a transient ischemic attack (TIA). He reviewed many trials and was able to conclude that the risk of stroke after suffering a TIA is maximal in the first 7 days and carotid endarterectomy confers maximum benefit in the first two weeks after TIA onset.
