Antioxidant - Glutathione
Glutathione [L-Glutathione, GSH] is an amino acid commonly
referred to as as the toxic waste neutralizer of the
body.
It is a small tripeptide made up of three amino acids:
cysteine, glutamate and glycine.
L-Glutathione is the body's most powerful antioxidant
and detoxifying agent; especially in its "reduced"
form; GSH.
GSH is present in nearly every natural substance,
and has five major roles in the body:
- a reducing agent, nutritionally protecting the
body against powerful natural and man-made oxidants.
It maintains the iron of hemoglobin in its reduced
(ferrous) state.
- a natural scavenger, helping the liver detoxify
poison from the blood
- nutritionally maintains immune function
- protects red blood cell membranes
- a neurotransmitter, possibly being involved with
thyroid production and lactation of women.
Benefits of Glutathione
Glutathione has shown to:
- reverse the damage caused by oxidative stress to
the body, relieving inflammation.
- helps protec nerve cells from damage, which leads
to peripheral neuropathy.
- helps provide protection against HIV-1, low levels
of glutathione in CD4 T-cells are linked to decreased
survival rates for HIV-positive individuals.
- help prevent cataract formance - glutathione levels
in the eye decrease with age, significantly increasing
the vulnerability of the lens to cataract formation;
the leading cause of impaired vision. When proteins
become oxidized within the lens of the eye, they become
more opaque, clouding the lens, and stopping light
from entering. Glutathione prevents this oxidation.
in its L-Glutathione form, is a powerful, and available,
antioxidant to the body. It protects sulfur-containing
proteins from oxidizing or free radical damage.
Recent research has also found that low levels of glutathione
also correlate to macular degeneration, the deterioration
of the macular at the back of the retina.
Other compounds which are important in eye maintenance,
are selenium, a potent antioxidant and precursor of
glutathione, Vitamins C and E, and zinc, manganese and
magnesium. All these elements are found in Ocu-Care.
