Antioxidant - Selenium
Selenium
Although not an antioxidant itself, selenium is a trace
metal required for proper function of one of the body's
antioxidant enzyme systems. Selenium works synergistically
with vitamin E. The enzyme, glutathione peroxidase,
protects cellular membranes and irritation from metals.
Deficiency Results in: an increased risk
of cancer, and adequate selenium intake is correlated
with a reduced incidence of malignancy, particularly
of the breasts, colon, and lungs, common sites of cancer.
