Oats / Oatmeal
Steel-cut [ also called coarse-cut oats] oatmeal is
rich in heart-healthy compounds called phenols.
When oat phenols and vitamin C are combined they work
together to reinforce LDL cholesterol and make it more
stable. Stable LDL means it’s less likely to break
down and stick to the walls of your arteries - a common
cause of heart attacks and strokes.
Olives, Olive Oil / Extract
Supplementation with olive extract has been shown to
provide decreased pain and inflammation, and improved
the quality of life of people suffering from osteoarthritis
Onions
Onions are cancer fighters and proven artery protectors.
Bitter, strong, pungent onions having more cancer-fighting
compounds than milder, sweeter bulbs. Shallots, a cross
between onion and garlic have the most health benefits.
The four onion varieties with the best antioxidant
power:
- Shallots
- Western Yellow
- New York Bold
- Northern Red
Oranges
Oranges are known to protect against heart disease
and high blood pressure, and are full of cancer-fighting
phytochemicals.
A common myth in parts of Asia, including Japan, is
that eating too many oranges makes people gain weight,
increases fats in the blood, and leads to diabetes.
Scientists found the opposite: Diabetes was less common
in people in Asia who ate one to four oranges a day
than in those who rarely ate the fruit.
