Zinc
Low blood levels of zinc may be linked to an increased
risk of pneumonia amongst the elderly, suggesting the
benefits of supplements for this at risk population,
according to research.
Zinc is one of the most plentiful trace elements in
the body, second only to iron. It mediates many physiological
functions and is believed to be essential for maintaining
a healthy immune system.
Zinc protects against cell-damaging, cancer-causing
free radicals. A study showed that when low blood levels
of zinc was found in conjunction with low blood levels
of magnesium death rates for the 30-60 age group increased
dramatically.
You can get your daily allowance of zinc [12 milligrams
a day] from crab, oysters, pork, poultry, beans, cashews,
and yogurt. Or find a good multivitamin with less than
15 milligrams. Too much zinc can inhibit other important
minerals from doing their job.
